Chaos on Ravalneer
History (Years 1000 PS to 2215 AS)
In the year 1000 PS, the Realm of the Seven Kingdoms was thrown into war. The Dread Dragon, Kahtara, seduced the king of the humans, Arnos Isacar, and convinced him to attack the Lower Kingdoms. Arnos forced his allies in the Greater Kingdoms to agree to the war. Without warning, the Greater Kingdoms swept into the lesser.
The war almost won, Kahtara decided she wanted more chaos. She sent some soldiers into the kingdom of the dwarves using Arnos’s name. She then convinced the king of the dwarves that the humans were there not to aid the dwarves, but to steal their land. The dwarves at first didn’t believe her, but when the humans went to a town near the border rather than straight to the capital, the dwarves grew angry. They pulled back some of their forces from the battle with the lesser kingdoms and sent them to confront the humans. Because they were still technically allies, the leaders of the two forces decided to meet and figure out what was going on. As they met, an assassin killed the two with arrows of elven make. When news of this reached the human and dwarven kingdoms, the alliance disintegrated.
Now it was an all-out war. Former allies turned upon each other. None made new alliances for fear that they would again be betrayed. There seemed no end to the bloodshed. Then, 800 years after the war began, a human soldier named Retna began amassing a force. He brought in not only humans, but dwarves and elves who were tired of the fighting as well. He swept through the Third Kingdom, calming the peace-loving elves. With one combatant removed from the war, the others slowly ceased fighting.
Kahtara, seeing that her chaos had ended, grew angry. She placed doubts into the mind of the human king (the 8th since Arnos); convincing him that Retna intended to steal his throne. He ordered some of the troops still loyal to him to infiltrate Retna’s Army. In the middle of the night, the insurgent force attempted to assassinate Retna in his sleep. They were thwarted, however, when Sanya, Retna’s wife, awoke to them entering the tent. As a mage, Sanya was able to fend of the would-be assassins until her husband awoke. His rage at seeing his wife fighting those meant to kill him grew so hot that he quickly leapt to the battle. He killed almost all of the attackers so quickly that most didn’t even realize he had awoken. The remaining attacker surrendered and begged for his life. It was then that Retna discovered that the king wanted him dead. As he left his tent, now soaked with the blood of his assailants, he grew in the eyes of his soldiers. 15 lay dead by his hands. Not once had he picked up his weapon during the night.
Outraged at the king’s audacity, the dwarves and elves demanded his removal from power. The citizens of the First Kingdom showed their agreement by storming the castle. All of the king’s men, instead of turning back the rabble, joined with them. The king, however, somehow managed to escape. No one has seen him since.
Now leaderless, the First Kingdom demanded that Retna take the throne. He reluctantly agreed. King Retna created a Pact with the other kingdoms, save the Seventh who always keep neutral, which banded them together under one king. For once in the history of the Seven Kingdoms, there was peace. Retna, now High King, ruled for 200 years, far beyond a normal human lifespan. The realms grew close together and the old animosities of the past seemed to die. Then, one night, the advisor to the throne, Caliel, coordinated a coup and had High King Retna assassinated. This time, with Sanya not around to help him, Retna failed to defeat the assailants. Caliel declared himself King, removing all who opposed him. The other Kingdoms all decided to break the Pact, rather than be ruled by one who they saw as a madman.
After this, Caliel made a pact with a demon, gaining immeasurable power. He granted part of this power to those who served him most fervently, known as the Crimson Claw. Life grew hard for the citizens of the First Kingdom. New taxes and oppression seemed to come from the palace every day.
Caliel’s power was not destined to last, however. Retna’s son, Erebus, escaped the castle on the night of the coup. Three years later, he joined up with the Resistance movement. He kept his true identity a secret for another 2 years when he had worked his way to leading the Resistance. The Resistance then created an alliance with the Second and Third kingdoms, sending in members to assist them in their times of need. The resistance movement culminated in a small group challenging Caliel in the castle. The group consisting of Erebus, a former dwarven bodyguard named Harsk, a kobold named Bregga, a catfolk rouge named , and an elven cleric named , defeated Caliel’s minions and had seriously wounded Caliel, However, Caliel activated his power granted to him by the demon, creating a subrealm in the form of a large sphere floating above the castle, transporting himself and the group into it. After a fierce battle, Erebus managed to deal a deathblow to Caliel. With his death, however, he managed to kill all the other members of the group. Upon his death, the subrealm shattered, shooting fragments all over the continent. These fragments contain the essence of the souls of those trapped within the sphere.
